Napoleon and Pianosa's barley

A stroll in Pianosa, which Napoleon visited twice in 1814 in order to assess what use to make of it, like building Fort Teglia and promoting farming and the breeding of livestock and having some families from Elba settle in Pianosa; this in time turned out to be hardly profitable due to transportation costs, as in the saying that goes, “you are more expensive than Pianosa's barley.”   Bring a packed lunch.

Duration of the walk: about 4 hours with breaks for explanations and lunch
