WHAT :

Interprovincial Park of Montoni

The Interprovincial Park of Montoni is run by the Provinces of Livorno and Grosseto, it's a protected area of approximately 7.000 hectors (on top of the 10.000 hectors that make up the contiguous area or pre-park) in a hill territory comprised between the basins of the Cornia and Pecora rivers, recently rediscovered as an ideal habitat by the wolf who has returned to this neck of the woods. Amidst it’s arbutus berries and holm oaks the Park hides: Medieval Towers, castles of the first millennia, smelting ovens and secular paths that lead to ancient mines.

The territory is rich in historical strata that witness ruins dating back from proto-historic settlements to those ones of the Etruscans and Romans over which lay Medieval buildings such as la Pievaccia, the ruins of the Castle of Montioni Vecchio, the Spa of Montioni and the alum quarries. The lush Mediterranean bush shrub offers shelter to a great variety of animals amongst which the roe deer and the wild boar.

The network of paths offers a variety of choices to enjoy either on foot, on mountain bike or horse riding.
