Provincial Park of the Hills of Livorno
Wooded hills that cherish secrets that date back millions of years. Over 3.300 hectors
of Parks (in the Municipalities of Livorno, Collesalvetti and Rosignano Marittimo)
offer a stunning landscape between sea and Mediterranean bush scrub, rocks clad
in green and crystal clear streams. Trails to be covered on foot, on horse back
or mountain bike along the old provincial horse track that leads to the heart of
the lush desmenial forests discovering traces of ancient civilisations.
The hills of Livorno were formed during the Mid-Miocene some 15-20 million years
ago. Cistus, brooms and manna ashes characterize the least wooded areas. The side
facing the sea presents splendid pine groves where as in the internal valleys and
on the eastern side are woodlands rich in Holm oaks, turkey oaks, chestnut and hazel
nut trees.
The presence of water allows the development of sheltering woodlands of poplars,
willows and ashes. Significantly good presence of fauna: amongst the mammals are
wild boars, foxes, martens, stone martens and weasels, amongst the birds the owl,
the white owl, the barn owl and some interesting species such as redstarts, lesser
white warbler, Dartford warbler. The hills of Livorno preserve traces that witness
the presence of man during the Palaeolithic age and the Etruscan period.
